SHORTWOOD’S promotion charge gathered pace with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Abingdon Town.
Wood gave a debut to former Bishops Cleeve striker Kacey Johnstone and he slotted into the side very quickly - scoring the first goal and contributing well throughout the evening. Wood could easily have been in front before scoring after only 12 minutes. Wood worked a clever move from a corner and Matt Green crossed low into the area where Johnstone stretched and poked the ball home from 6 yards.
Wood went 2-0 up after 25 minutes. Pete Smith chased a hopeful ball down and beat Town keeper Walker to it. His cross to Johnstone was blocked at the expense of a corner and Vic Webb's kick was fired home through a ruck of players by Ross Casey.
Wood scored a third within a minute of the restart. Smith made ground down the left and his cross shot hit a defender on the arm and deflected in for an unfortunate own goal. Wood scored their fourth after 59 minutes. Matt Collins raced through the town defence and unselfishly laid the ball off to Matt Green who side footed the ball into the empty net. Wood's fifth goal came after Town had a corner following a flying Thomas save. Wood broke away at speed. Johnstone put James Coates through with a superb pass and he ran on unchallenged and scored coolly.
With 10 minutes to go Rich Thomas turned a shot from Ben Green onto the post and then Shortwood grabbed their sixth after 83 minutes. Matt Bennett and Webb swapped passes down the left; Webb raced into the area and was brought down. Leon Cornwall took the spot kick and scored comfortably. Shortwood: Thomas, Cornwall, Bennett, Bennyworth (Steadman 58), Mammola, Smith (Coates 59), Casey, Matt Green, Collins (Mike Green 68), Johnstone, Webb.
