PLAY-OFFS assured, single-minded Forest Green boss Mark Cooper applauded his side’s brilliant achievement, but now he wants more.
Cooper’s side guaranteed their place in the end of season play-offs with their fourth win on the spin following a 2-1 victory over Cambridge United on Easter Monday.
Gavin Gunning’s first goal of the season gave Rovers the lead at the break, but Paul Lewis netted second-half parity for the U’s. However. Christian Doidge’s 14th goal of the season sealed the match.
With Mansfield Town losing 3-2 at Oldham and MK Dons drawing at home to Port Vale, Rovers jumped up to fifth - three points shy of the automatics, with two games of the regular season to go.
Cooper beamed: “We’ve qualified for the play-offs, which is a brilliant achievement, but we have two really tough final games – Crewe away, who can still get in the play-offs and Exeter at home, who are scrapping to get in the play-offs.This is a brilliant achievement for the boys and the club.
Surviving the drop last season by a point, Cooper has moulded a side capable of dining at the top table.
“From where we were last year – we stayed up and we’ve kicked on this year and still kept to our style and the way of playing, so full credit to the boys.”
Rovers have hit their straps at the business end of the season, but Cooper insists his side have done nothing yet.
“Nice to come into form towards the end of the season when you have all to play for of course, but we’ve done nothing yet - all we’ve done is qualify to play a semi-final with a chance to go to Wembley and get promoted, so a lot of work to do.”
