EBULLIENT Joseph Mills is champing at the bit as Forest Green's League Two season reaches a thrilling climax.
With four games of the regular season to go, Mark Cooper's side are all but guaranteed a place in the play-offs after a pivotal 2-0 victory over Macclesfield, which saw Mills create a goal for Christian Doidge and then help himself to a late howitzer, his fourth goal of the season.
Mills said: “It was a good day’s work really. To be fair I've got a few assists and goals this season, but not for a few games. It was on my mind but it is getting to that time of the season where it is just about results. Fortunately today I was involved in the goals. But most importantly we came away with the three points.
Asked if the first goal for Doidge was somewhat fortuitous, Mills responded: “Only he (Christian Doidge) knows but it is one hell of a goal to be fair to him. I was trying to get it across the front but I took a little bit off it."
Mills backed himself when he fizzed in a second with two minutes to go.
He added: “I wasn’t sure if it was too far out but at the same time I back myself to try and test the goalie. I picked my spot and fortunately it went in."
Rovers were far from the best, but Mills insisted his side took the game to a Macclesfield side in rude health.
“I think in patches we put some good stuff together, but the final third decision making was a little bit off and let us down a little bit. But at the same time I think we controlled the game today which we maybe got away from in the last few games.
“And with four games to go it is all about results.
“Macclesfield have some good players. They are down their fighting for their lives. But at the same time they played Exeter midweek and came away with a win. We knew they weren’t to be underestimated.
“They were going to come high on confidence and it was our job to nullify that and impose ourselves on the game and I think we did that today?
“We are not getting carried away with ourselves, we have been a little bit too inconsistent with our results and that is something we are trying to put right.
“Fortunately we did that with the last two games and long may that continue."
Rovers travel to high-flying promotion rivals Tranmere on Good Friday and Mills is relishing the test against their old non-league rivals and try to contain former Forest Green striker James Norwood.
He said: “We have to focus on the next game which is Tranmere on Friday. They are a good team.
“They have picked up very well this season and Norwood will score a lot of goals.
“We look forward to the challenge.”
Adding goals to his game has given the attacking wing-back an extra dimension this season and Mills is targeting more.
He added: “Yes massively, I think my highest before was two in the season. I am on four now and hopefully I can get more before the end of the season.”
