PLANS to resurface London Road in Stroud have been welcomed.
Closures on the A419 route are set to last almost a month while a stretch is resurfaced in the autumn.
A letter was sent out last Wednesday, July 5 to residents explaining the closures, which will be in place between the Bowbridge crossroads and Cowcombe Hill for around 26 nights between 7pm and 7am.
The planned start and end dates are Tuesday, September 12 and Tuesday, October 17.
Pete Kennedy, Green Party candidate for Stroud who lives in Chalford, said: "It is good news that the A419 London Road is being resurfaced.
"This road has become very dangerous, worse than any main road I've seen in the UK."
In the last few weeks rude markings have also appeared on Rodborough Hill, London Road and other pothole ridden roads across Stroud to highlight the poor surfaces.
District councillor Robin Layfield (Community Independents, Rodborough) highlighted how dangerous potholes can be.
He said: “My family and I have been directly affected by the deteriorating road conditions in Stroud as my daughter broke her arm and lost a tooth after being thrown from her bike going over a large pothole on her way home from school last year.”
The letter from Gloucestershire County Council about the A419 resurfacing reads: "We will be resurfacing the road as part of our promise to invest a further £100 million in the county's roads.
"To ensure the safety of road users and our work force, we have made a temporary traffic order to close the road.
"In accordance with this, we are not permitted to allow any person or vehicle to proceed along the closed roads, except for pedestrian access to properties, emergency vehicles and statutory undertakers responding to an emergency.
"Due to the type of engineering activities required with carriageway resurfacing, the road closure area may cover an area greater than the area being resurfaced.
"This is to allow activities such as movement and placement of machinery and material.
"We appreciate that this is likely to cause disruption to your business, however we have tried to arrange it at a time that will minimise inconvenience while allowing us to get the work completed as quickly as possible."
