DURING September Wine Circle members went on their annual day out which this year consisted of a visit to Haynes Motor Museum situated at Sparkford, near Yeovil which proved to be most interesting with an informative guide relating the history of some previous owners of vehicles on display.
This was followed by a visit to Avalon Organic Vineyard near Shepton Mallet.
The owner, Dr Tripp, took members on a guided tour of the vineyard which was followed by several tasting of wine made not only from grapes but other assorted soft fruit.
Also in September several members entered wine in the Reddings horticultural show and did extremely well with Dave Marlow, Christine Philp, Valerie Fussell and Brenda Marlow all picking up first places.
The inaugural award of the Angela Brint Memorial Cup for the best white dry wine was won by Dave Marlow.
Chris Evans, the owner of Dundry Nurseries was the guest speaker at the usual monthly meeting when he gave an hilarious talk on the ups and downs of running the business.
As a result of a meeting with disabled young people who were visiting the nursery some years ago he has become heavily involved in helping people of all ages who are disabled or suffered some tragic event in their life and as a result his commitment has become well known.
In addition to the normal speakers fee a collection was made among members which resulted in a substantial sum being raised to further his worthwhile cause.
Valerie Fussell thanked him for an interesting and stimulating presentation.
There were two competitions judged by Peter Webb and Michael Neale from Brockworth.
The bitter beer was won by Jean Wilkins with Dave Marlow second and Ursula Lambert third.
The social blackberry was won by Dave Marlow with Janice Coleman second and Brenda Marlow third.
