AN EXHIBITION of paintings by Herewood Gabriel opens at The Attic Space, Kendrick Street Gallery, on Saturday, August 7.

Herewood had to unlearn everything he was taught at art college when he became a green monk in 1983.

His new teacher, a former portrait artist, showed him a way of painting from within, using his feelings as a guide, rather than his mind. Quite zen like really.

It took him seven years to master the technique and then another seven years to harmonise it with his formal training as an illustrator.

The monastic community folded in 1997 when his teacher died. Herewood later married and moved to Devon, where he continued his creative work and involved himself in the local art scene, making sculptures from recycled and found materials and making giant lanterns for the Totnes Lantern Procession.

Recently he moved near to Stroud, where he continues to paint, and he occasionally runs painting workshops on his soulscapes technique.

Herewood Gabriel's exhibition is at The Attic Space, Kendrick Street Gallery, August 7-30, Monday-Saturday 9am - 5.30pm. Meet the artist on Saturday, August 14, 10.30am to 12.30pm.
