FOR those who have finished their GCSEs, they are already, here but for many the wait continues for the summer holidays.

My six-week break has been given a healthy extension this year, and having finished my exams I am left wondering how to fill July and August.

Years ago, keeping ourselves entertained was easier, as 10 or 11-year-olds, snail races and skateboarding were all we needed.

Now, however, things have got a little more complicated.

Next year, school leavers will be driving, iPods need buying and the PlayStation 3 comes out soon.

All this means it is time to start earning, and for many it is time to get a job.

There are many ways this can be done but for those of us who enjoy a lie-in or sitting on the sofa in the morning watching Cash in the Attic it can be unappealing.

It is something however that can be a valuable experience, and not just in terms of saving for your latest investment.

Gaining experience in the world of work during the summer will give you the chance to meet new people, improve your confidence and hopefully enjoy yourself.

Jobs in a supermarket packing groceries are available but if that isn't your bag then you could do a lot worse than giving Connexions a try.

It offers advice on who to see, where to go and what jobs will best suit you, providing you with something you are more likely to enjoy, and after all that's what summer holidays should be about.

It has an office at the top of the high street in Stroud, and best of all the advice is free.

So those of you who are getting a summer job to cover the next eight weeks good luck and enjoy - but for anyone snail racing, I always find a wet track and a gentle nudge in the right direction will help your mollusc to racing glory.
