THE FINEST homegrown produce, arts and handicrafts were admired by hundreds of villagers at the annual Stonehouse Horticultural Show and Summer Jolly. Row upon row of flowers, fruits and home baked goods were judged in the Community Centre while visitors enjoyed a dog agility show, fete games and market stalls outside on Laburnum Playing Field during the double extravaganza on Saturday, July 24. Among the day’s top prize winners in the show was Rachel Warburton, who won The Highfield Rose Bowl – sponsored by Highfield Garden World in Whitminster – for the most outstanding rose exhibit. Elsewhere, Lin Powell claimed the Dr David Cross Flower Trophy for the best plants selection while Sheila Page was awarded the Mayor’s Challenge Vase for the finest mixed flowering stems. One of the year’s newest trophies – The Jeff Ross Memorial Cup – was handed to Don Briggs for his varied fruit and vegetable exhibits. Introduced in memory of town mayor Mattie Ross’ late husband, the cup was presented by their son Jamie, who traveled from London for the occasion. More awards were given to Pamela King for her fruit scones and D.A Wilkins for his collection of homemade wines. Outside on the playing field, pupils from Park Infants School staged a country dancing show and Stonehouse Youth Football Club held a penalty shoot-out event. Senior steward Gary Powell said: "We are absolutely thrilled with how it went – the exhibits were beautiful. "Some of the people who turned up and had never been before said it was like stepping back to the old summer fetes of the 1950s. "There was great family fun to be had everywhere."
