VICTORY in Europe was celebrated in style at Stroud Valley Primary School on Tuesday, July 20 by key stage two children, who brought to life the iconic street celebrations.

In 1945 more than one million people celebrated in the streets to mark the end of the European campaign, but many hardships remained with continued rationing of food and clothing.

65 years on the children got a flavour of those celebrations tasting rationed food on long tables out in their playground.

The menu consisted of corned beef hash, macaroni cheese, champ and onions, sponge and custard as well as rock cakes.

The day formed the climax of the children’s history lessons, which centred on the Second World War.

It began with the children being evacuated from their classrooms and guided through to areas where they carried out 1940s activities including singing songs of the era like cliffs of Dover and run rabbit run.

Suzanne Boston, head of key stage two, said: " It was a very successful day and the children really got into it. They loved the role play, which helped them to relate to how people lived in wartime Britain."
