TIMOTHY Davis racially and religiously abused an Asian doorman and attempted to assault him with a baseball bat, a court heard.

Davis pleaded guilty to harassing the man and possessing an offensive weapon when he appeared at Stroud Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, July 21.

Sharon Green, prosecutor, explained how Davis he had arrived at the Swan Inn, Stroud, at 11pm on Friday, May 28 but his female companion had not been let in because she was considered to be too drunk.

Davis, aged 44, of Bisley Old Road, Stroud, then went inside to buy drinks and attempted to bring them outside to her.

When he was stopped by the door supervisor he began racially abusing the man, referring to him as a Muslim.

At 1am, he returned with a baseball bat seeking out the doorman and swore at him, again referring to him as a Muslim and asked why he had been thrown out.

Police were called and Davis was arrested.

Frazer Stuart, defending, said: "Clearly it was a distasteful and unpleasant incident and my client’s recollection of it is blurred.

"When he was told what had happened, his reaction was one of remorse. He is not a man who has been before you here in court.

"He was drinking and cannot remember getting a bat or using the bad language and cannot believe that he did it."

Mr Frazer explained that Davis had been receiving help for anger management and depression and since the incident had volunteered for counselling.

The bench agreed that their sentencing powers were not sufficient.

Davis will be sentenced at Gloucester Crown Court on Wednesday, August 11.
