TWO pregnant alpacas had flesh ripped off their legs in an alleged dog attack at a farm in Windmill Road, Minchinhampton.

The alpacas, Eva, seven, and Fleur, three, were attacked between 6pm on Tuesday, July 13 and 8.30am on Wednesday, July 14.

Both were bitten on the legs and suffered six-inch deep wounds where the flesh had been ripped away.

Nick and Sue Atkins, who own Atkins Alpacas - a herd of around 35 - found the pair bleeding on Wednesday morning.

Mr Atkins, who has farmed alpacas in Minchinhampton for the past eight years, said: "It was an awful attack - both alpacas had a big chunk of flesh ripped off their legs.

"We did not find them until the morning because we were out on Tuesday night.

"It meant the flesh could not be saved and we were left with a vets bill of just under £400.

"Thirty six staples had to be put into the surrounding area of leg on both alpacas."

Police, who are investigating the incident, believe a dog jumped over a neighbour's wall on Tuesday evening and attacked the two animals.

Mr Atkins has since been told by witnesses that a man was seen shouting at a black dog to get out of the paddock.

Police have asked for anyone with information, and the owner of the dog, to contact them on 0845 090 1234 quoting incident number 174 of July 15. Or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
