DISTRESSSED cows woke residents in Ebley when one of the herd fell in the River Frome and became stuck in thick mud early on Saturday morning, July 10.
Fire crews and a towing truck were quickly called to the scene in Ebley Meadow near Bridge Mead around 5.30am where the cow was discovered frantically trying to clamber up the bank.
Its calf was found by the river edge in a clearly distressed state and the rest of the herd continued mooing loudly throughout the ordeal.
Despite the cow eventually being manhandled out of the river after more than two hours of failed attempts, its leg was so badly injured that it had to be put down.
The farmer has been informed of the incident.
