INVENTIVE and innovative looking scarecrows could be seen in Avening recently when a trail around the village raised nearly £300 for the memorial hall. Prizes were given to the top three scarecrows made by villagers and judged by those who took part.

Trail organisers Sarah Hancock, Elizabeth Oliver, Sarah Smith and Jo Missenden designed it to raise money for Avening Memorial Hall.

Avening WI served drinks and cakes and sold biscuits made by pupils at Avening Primary School. The best scarecrow was judged to be one named Adam – a bird watcher hiding in a wheelie bin.

Villagers and visitors took part by buying a trail map from the memorial hall and walked round the village looking for scarecrows and their clues. A winner was then selected from the 48 entrants in a prize draw.

Organiser Jo Missenden said: "This was the second annual scarecrow trail and interest grows each year so we look forward to some amazing entries when it is staged next year."
