THE Birdlip road has now been re-opened following the discovery of a second world war explosive yesterday.
Police had closed the road after the explosive was found on a building site near by.
The item, believed to be an AW bomb from World War 2, was discovered by staff working at the building site at approximately 1.45pm this afternoon, Wednesday July 7, when it burst into flames. Nobody was injured.
The road was closed just before the Royal George Public House and will remain closed whilst a bomb disposal unit attend to ensure the area is safe.
The building crew have been evacuated from the site.
Motorists and local residents are thanked for their patience whilst the road was closed and the area made safe.
