HUB LIVE at Stroud Subscription Rooms continues its run of exciting and highly decorative nights of eclectic musical frenzy this weekend with an Afro-jazz-infused night featuring Hlel.

Hlel play a fusion of traditional Cameroonian music and afro-jazz. The band are lead by Alphonse Daudet Touna, who sings and plays balafon (an African xylophone) and percussion.

Alphonse was born in Cameroon and grew up in a musical family. As well as performing, Alphonse makes musical instruments and leads drumming, balafon and African dance workshops in schools and community organisations.

He has performed in Cameroon, Italy, France and the UK, both with bands and as a solo artist. Since coming to this country he has played at various events including: Ashton Court Festival, Harbourside Festival in Cardiff and Bristol, Wamm Festival in Bristol, an Arts Council Showcase in Plymouth and the St Paul's carnival.

Supporting Hlel on the night are local jazz heros The Latin Project, featuring Billy Woodman on piano, Mike Waite on bass, Carlos Alvarez on sax and flute and Barry Mason on drums. The Latin Project are "dedicated to promoting the great Latin songbook with a modern perspective".

DJ Mr Messy will also be present with intentions to honour the afro-jazz groove.

The night will also act as an introduction to Fairtrade fortnight. There will also be information, Fairtrade tea, coffee, wine, nibbles, chocolate and plenty of bananas at the Hub Acoustic nights in the Sub rooms Cafe on the March 8 and 15.

Hub Live at the Subs takes place on Friday, March 3 between 8.30pm and 1am. Tickets, priced £5, are available from the box office or on the door before 10.30pm.
