TEENAGER Luke Connor viciously attacked a professional footballer with a bottle in a Stroud nightclub.

Matthew Young, who plays for a club in Brazil, was enjoying a night out with old friends at the Warehouse in Russell Street when he was assaulted on July 8 last year.

Connor, aged 18, of Stratford Road, Stroud, denied unlawfully wounding Mr Young but was found guilty at Gloucester Crown Court on Wednesday.

He was remanded in custody until sentencing.

The trial heard how Mr Young, 20, who plays for a professional second division side in Brazil, visited the club with two friends but only stayed briefly.

"We finished our drinks and made our way to the exit," he said.

"I walked through the bar area and someone brushed against me.

"He sort of muttered something in my ear.

"I couldn't really catch what he was saying and as I turned my body around I was struck to the centre of my forehead with a glass bottle."

He said there had been a confrontation in the queue earlier.

"He pushed into my back - I thought it was a friend at first. A bouncer split us up," he said.

Mr Young said he had only drunk three glasses of wine.

"Being a footballer I'm not a very big drinker and I live a healthy lifestyle," he said.

Mr Young was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Connor denied using a bottle but said he punched Mr Young in self-defence.
