WORRIED mother Nicola Robbins says she was not told her baby had contracted hospital superbug MRSA for three months.

Now Nicola and husband David, from Haresfield, have made an official complaint against Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, where they believe their son Daniel caught the illness.

They are angry because it was a consultant at another hospital who had to break the news.

Daniel was only seven-weeks-old when he was operated on for a hernia in one of his testicles at GRH at the end of July.

His parents believe he picked up the infection. during his stay.

Mrs Robbins, 39, a catering contracts manager, said Daniel's health got worse after he left hospital.

When she took him back to GRH he was referred to a specialist at Bristol Children's Hospital to be treated for an infection.

On August 1, Daniel had a second operation to drain off the infection - but at that time the couple were not told it was MRSA.

It wasn't until the end of October that the specialist informed them.

"When I found out I was in total panic - especially because of all the media coverage surrounding MRSA during the summer," said Mrs Robbins.

"He is healthy now, but we should have been told at the time because anything could have happened to him."

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said every effort was made to minimise the risk of MRSA in its hospitals.

A trust spokesman added: "We are very sorry that Mr and Mrs Robbins are unhappy with the information they have been given about Daniel's treatment.

"We have received a letter from Mr Robbins and are investigating the issues he has raised and will respond to these in due course.

"Until we have contacted the family it would be inappropriate for us to comment further."

Recent surveillance results however show the trust is below the national average rate for the occurrence of MRSA.
