DRIVERS are being urged to take care on Minchinhampton Common after a 26-year-old man died in a two-car collision.
The man, from the Stroud area, was driving a white Peugeot on the stretch of road between Tom Long's Post and Nailsworth on Sunday.
The accident, which also involved a silver Honda, happened at 2pm between the New Lodge and the Half Way House.
He was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital with serious head injuries but died later that day.
The occupants of the Honda also needed hospital treatment but were released with minor injuries.
The road was closed until 8.30pm while police investigated the scene.
Nearby residents said motorists should take more care on that stretch.
Lynne Edmunds, of nearby Amberley, said poor weather conditions at this time of year make roads across the common more hazardous.
"You get a lot of fog up there and it was very murky on Sunday," she said.
"Whether you are walking or driving, it is very easy to get disorientated.
"All you can do is be ultra cautious and drive very slowly."
Nailsworth town councillor and former mayor Lesley Williams-Allen said drivers had to slow down and be aware of potential distractions.
"That stretch of road has all the problems associated with the common," she said.
"I think a lot of people travel too fast given that there are golfers, kite flyers and cattle around."
Anyone with information about the incident should contact police on 0845 090 1234.
