Nick Quilliam's dedication to practising and teaching Wado-Ryu Karate has seen the Stroud karate legend awarded a top accolade.
Nick, 52, has made a unique contribution to karate and has now been recognised by Japan's International Wado-Ryu Federation awarding him the title of Renshi. Renshi translates into 'polished expert' and denotes the importance that they attach to his achievements.
He has now joined an elite group of only four European practitioners to be awarded this prestigious title.
He has trained with the world's top Japanese masters, and all of his Dan grades have been awarded by Hironori Ohtsuka the Grand Master of Wado-Ryu Karate. He is currently a Black Belt 6th Dan, which makes him the second highest Wado-Ryu Karate black belt in Britain.
After beginning karate in 1969 he quickly progressed to 1st Dan in 1975. European glory followed at Kumite in 1981 and Kata in 1983.
A former engineer, Nick gave up his day job in 1992 after his teaching was recognised by Japan's Wado-Ryu Federation. He was then issued an International instructor's certificate; which enabled him to teach full time.
Nick teaches at Stratford Park on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at Nailsworth on Fridays, Stonehouse on Wednesdays and Hardwicke on Mondays. He also gives private lessons.
