THE Subscription Rooms' contribution to Stroud Fringe Festival weekend, some of which has been programmed in association with Artspace, is an eclectic and exciting one, packed with punchy poetry, killer klezmer music, fabulous food for thought, angelic acoustic music and a set from folk/punk diva Hazel O'Connor.
On Friday, September 9, Hazel O'Connor and The Subterraneans play a Celtic Soul set in the ballroom at 8pm (tickets £12.50 or £10.50 concessions). Eccentric slam poets AF Harrold and Elvis McGonagall are joined by Stroud poets Philip Rush, Chris Seiles and Crispin Thomas in the Caf Bar for the return of 'HooHah (Poetry in Commotion)' at 9pm on Friday (tickets £5 or £4 concessions).
Combining foot-tapping klezmer, exotic Arab-influenced dance music from the old Ottoman world and haunting, mystical ballads of the ghetto, The Burning Bush cross cultural boundaries with music both timeless and topical on Saturday, September 10 at 7.30pm (tickets £12.50 or £10.50 concessions).
Also appearing on Saturday, at 2pm, is Matthew Fort, author, food writer for The Guardian and Stroud resident, who will be talking about food and his career as a restaurant critic.
He will also be talking about his new book, Eating Up Italy, a gastronomic trip through Italy on the back of a Vespa. The event promises to be a lip-smackingly good hour of food fascination.
Between 11am and 5pm on Saturday, the Hub Acoustic Collective will be presenting a wide variety of live music in an intimate setting.
