CHALFORD residents have won their fight for speed reduction measures at a notorious accident black spot.

An urgent meeting is to take place between police and council chiefs to discuss both long and short term solutions for the stretch of the A419 running through the village and a length of road called Old Neighbourhood.

Officers will be looking at imposing 40mph limits in the area to slow traffic.

Old Neighbourhood was the scene of two car accidents in as many days six weeks ago (SNJ report, Wednesday, June 22) and is used by children to walk to Christ Church Primary School.

Residents have also been concerned about the safety of the A419.

Now John Lindsay, area traffic manager at Gloucestershire County Council, and John Pickering, Gloucestershire Constabulary's transport inspector, are to meet residents to discuss various options.

The news has been welcomed by residents, who have been campaigning for the council to take urgent action.

"It's been going on for as long as I've been living here," said mother-of-four Camilla Boon, 48, who lives just off the A419 near Chalford Industrial Estate.

"Our house was damaged by a van that came off the main road, so I feel quite strongly about it."

"I have children and I have to cross the road every morning.

"If they are going for an outing they have to walk down that pavement.

People frequently get struck by wing mirrors, which is quite alarming for a baby or small child."

Chalford Parish Council has been working with residents to try to get the county council to take action.

A county council spokesperson said: "We share the parish council's concerns over the safety issues of the Old Neighbourhood A419 cross-roads and will be working with the parish council over future proposals for this location."
