NELSON Street's charity fundraising street party went off with a bang during the Fringe Festival weekend, according to organisers.

Simon Vincent of Trading Post, one of the traders involved in the organisation of the street party, said: "It was a bit of a raging success. We were delighted with all the acts and the crowds of well-behaved people in attendance.

"For the headline act, Superjuice, there were at least 300 people on the street having a whale of a time - and it was the best set the band have done yet.

"There was a great deal of good music over the weekend; Youmademe, Popgang, The Form and Blueberry Pie were excellent, as were The Bagelfish Orchestra, Rod and Danny and Snorting Dogs."

The weather worked against Sunday's family day, but this didn't affect anyone's enjoyment too much according to Cam Robertson of The Duke of York.

"There was no trouble and no aggro whatsoever," he said, "just lots of people out having a good time despite the weather."

The event was a charity fundraiser for Winstons Wish and was put together by a team of volunteers.

"The organisers would like to thank all the bands, all the people who came, and Brian Mclean of DRT sound systems," added Simon. "Plus a big thanks to Matt Blackie and Jamie Wiseman for their technical flair and stage management.

"All things being equal, we'll return next year. Given that next year's Fringe Festival looks likely to be out of the town, we're hoping that the Poeple's Republic of Nelson Street will get even more support next year!"

The total raised for Winston's Wish by visitors to the street party was £488.75.
