A NIGHT of poetry, song, music and film comes to The Space in Stroud on Saturday, October 2 when father and son poets Michael and Adam Horovitz bring a Horovitz Family Poetry Reunion to the stage to celebrate the life and work of Frances Horovitz, who died 21 years ago to the day of the show.
The family of poets moved to Gloucestershire in 1971 and remain deeply connected to the Stroud area.
Adam lives and works in the town and Michael is hoping to return to the Slad cottage which was the family home until 1980.
Frances Horovitz was a much-loved poet and broadcaster who trained as an actress at Bristol University and RADA, and started writing poetry seriously around the time she married Michael in 1964.
She was the voice of the poetry department of BBC radio until she died in 1983, and had also toured with various programmes featuring the work of Thomas Hardy, John Keats and others as well as giving memorable readings of her own poetry.
Her work is well loved and much anthologised. The poet and critic Peter Levi wrote: "She has perfect rhythm, great delicacy and a rather Chinese yet very locally British sense of landscape. "Her poetry does seem to me to approach greatness."
Her writing was deeply connected to the Cotswold landscape as well as to the Welsh Marches, Northumbria and Cumbria.
The night at The Space, Lansdown starts at 8pm and will include a film of Frances working in schools, initially broadcast by the BBC, recordings of her reading her own poems, and poetry and song from Michael and Adam Horovitz, who will also read a selection of her work. Tickets are available from Riffs Music Shop in Threadneedle Street, Stroud at £8 or £6 concessions, or on the door.
Books and recordings by all three Horovitzes will be available on the night.
