AN ICE-SKATING rink, BMX track and indoor football pitch are among the facilities youngsters want to see in Stroud, a study has found.

Also on the wish list are an Internet café dedicated to children, an indoor pool with waterslides and sports coaching supervision.

But the survey, which involved more than 100 participants, found that children thought the town had lots of facilities for its size.

Speaking at a recreation and finance committee on Monday, December 1, Linda Townley said: "I’m not at all surprised with what they’ve asked for.

"When I talk to young people, they just want an opportunity to hang out somewhere.

"We do already have an internet café but perhaps it’s not being advertised enough – or perhaps it’s not cool enough for young people."

Cllr Townley, who is also district councillor for Uplands, said the list showed young people were disappointed with Stratford Park Leisure Centre.

"At the district council, we’ve recently been dismayed we’re not going to be able to go out and procure a fantastic leisure centre contract," she said.

But she added the town council might be able to help provide a BMX track.

Cllr Margaret Poulton said children would be able to travel to desired facilities in nearby towns if transport were better.

The survey, commissioned by the town council, was conducted on eight visits to Stratford Park and the town centre.
