A 19 year old Stroud man has admitted shooting a barmaid while trying to rob her at a Cotswold pub almost two weeks ago.

Ricky Joe Hawkins of Orchard rd, Ebley, Stroud, was remanded in custody for pre-sentence and psychiatric reports after pleading guilty to four charges at Gloucester crown court.

He admitted attempting to rob the woman on Nov 22nd, assaulting her causing actual bodily harm, having an imitation firearm, a Crossman 1008 repeat air weapon, with intent to commit robbery and having the same firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

Dermot Clarke, defending, asked for a pre-sentence report and added "Having spoken to his mother, there are concerns about mental health issues."

Judge Martin Picton said that as well as a pre-sentence report from a probation officer he would also ask for a report from the court's psychiatric liaison officer.

He told Hawkins he would be sentenced on 9th Jan.

"You know it's going to be a custodial sentence and it's going to be a long one," warned the judge.

Nicola Wager was working at the Old Crown pub in Paganhill, Stroud, on a Saturday night when she was shot in the abdomen following a struggle with an intruder.

"While not recommended, the barmaid's actions in tackling the intruder were remarkably courageous," said Chief Superintendent Gavin Thomas, of Stroud and Cotswolds police at the time of the incident.

"This type of incident is very rare in Stroud but we do understand the impact it can have on the local community."
