GREAT-GRANDFATHER Eddie Price has been presented with a Queen’s honour for voluntary services to archaeology in Frocester.
Mr Price, 85, a former president of the Gloucester and District Archaeological Group, received the MBE in front of 37 friends and family, incuding his wife Ruth.
"I would just like to say thank you very much," he said.
"This, in a way, is a recognition of the work the dig team has put in over the years."
Mr Price, a retired farmer of Frocester Court, became involved in archaeology when a Roman villa was found on his land 50 years ago.
He has since been involved in excavations at the site and published several studies and reports, including an extensive series on Frocester’s Roman heritage.
The honour was presented on behalf of the Queen by Henry Elwes, the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, at Frocester Cricket Club last Wednesday, November 26.
He told the gathering: "Mr Price has ensured that he has established strong working links with other archaeological and museum societies, and is well respected by his peers nation-wide.
"The Frocester Report sets an example to all archaeologists and local historians, often providing invaluable information, and acts as an advert for gathering volunteers."
Mr Price, who has 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, will also collect an honorary MA from the Open University next year.
