MANAGERS at Teckels Animal Sanctuary fear the credit crunch and looming recession will lead to an increase in the number of pets being abandoned this Christmas.

To raise extra funds to ensure these unwanted animals are cared for the centre is launching a Christmas appeal.

Supporters and businesses can support the centre by: * Donating dog or cat food, dried or tinned * Donating old towels, sheets and blankets * Provide foster homes for the temporary boarding of animals * Sending a donation rather than Christmas cards this year - make cheques made payable to Teckels Animals Sanctuaries.

* Ask for a Teckels Animals Sanctuaries collection tin for your business * Sponsor a cat or dog pen * Donate prizes for tombolas and raffles Staff also say it is more important than ever for shoppers to support its Christmas Blessing and Christmas Fayre on Wednesday, December 10 between 6pm and 9pm.

This will help the centre cover its £14,000 a month running costs.

The event is at the centre in Bristol Road, Whitminster and there is free secure parking at Attwoolls Outdoor Store. The Rev Canon Celia Thomson from Gloucester Cathedral will bless several animals currently at the shelter for re-homing.

There will be plenty to see and enjoy, including mulled wine, hot chocolate, mince pies, hot dogs, and carol singing plus a raffle, tombola and stalls selling Christmas gifts.

You can make a wish at the special Christmas tree and the highlight of the evening will be a visit by 'Santa Paws'.
