Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service’s chief officer Terry Standing has been awarded the Queen’s Fire Service Medal.

Mr Standing visited Windsor Castle with his family on Tuesday to collect the honour.

The medal is awarded for distinguished service to the fire brigade. Mr Standing has been serving for 29 years.

His contribution during the floods and in the clean up operation, was commended by Queen Elizabeth during the presentation.

HRH said it was a real privilege to present Mr Standing with his medal and that she was aware of his outstanding efforts during last year’s crisis.

It was the first time in more than 100 years for the ceremony to be held at Windsor, making the event extra special.

Mr Standing, who is also the Group Director for Gloucestershire County Council’s Community Safety Directorate, was 81st out of 83 people being awarded the medals.

But he said the wait was worth it: “It was an outstanding experience and meeting Queen Elizabeth was fantastic and something I am very proud of.

“She was very complimentary and thanked me for my work over the years and especially during the floods last year.

“Windsor Castle is an amazing setting and I felt very privileged to be there.

“This medal is not only testament to me, but to Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and the hard work being carried out every day saving lives and keeping people safe.”

Cllr Will Windsor Clive, Gloucestershire County Council’s cabinet member for community safety, said: “This is an excellent achievement for Terry and I would like to congratulate him on behalf of Gloucestershire County Council.

“The award is thoroughly deserved and relflects his commitment to Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and the county.”
