I WAS passing a food outlet in Stroud the other day.

The shopfront has one of these big glass windows.

There were four school kids sitting on a table. Opposite each other.

Two girls. Same brown long hair.

Same school uniform, same face. Same make up.

Two boys. Same haircut. Same school uniform, same face. Same facial expression.

They looked like clones. Straight off the assembly line. They were all busy on their smartphones. The girls, texting frantically at an unbelievable speed.

The boys just staring bored into the screen with dead eyes. There was no conversation going on. No eye contact. I was transfixed.

Then the junk food arrived.

By then I had crossed the road and watched the scenery from outside.

I was mesmerised. They started eating. Still the phone in one hand. No interaction.

Just the junk food, cola, the phone and silence. I suddenly felt very sick and went back to the car.

Is this the future?

I think the Government and in particular the parents of these poor children have a lot to answer for.
