COLUMN by Stroud mayor Tony Davey
Monday was the monthly Consultations & Highways Committee, where we not only reviewed current planning applications, but also were visited by two officers from the District Council who helped us understand how they process planning applications and more key elements to consider when reviewing them.
The Town Council is consulted on many planning cases within our wards, but it is the District Council that has the say.
With new councillors on board, and others who have served longer, it can help us all to better understand the rules, boundaries, and considerations.
On Tuesday morning there was a meeting to discuss innovative ways to tackle antisocial behaviour and business & retail crime in our communities, bringing together Stroud Safe, Town Council, District Council and Neighbourhood Policing Team, and giving us a chance to meet with the franchisees and local management of McDonalds (who were excellent hosts).
The company offers opportunities and careers for many young people, enabling them to build confidence in themselves and really grow.
They also work with community groups to support young people and their families.
It is a good example of where different organisations can work together to find innovative approaches that can really make a difference together, especially for those starting out in the next chapter of their life.
Regrettably I could not make the entire meeting due to other commitments but have seen very positive feedback from the wider meeting.
And lastly, I’ll leave you with an image you may have seen on the side of the multi-storey car park at the Brunel Mall. This may have more of a positive impact than it at first seems … more on that on next time.
