A STROUD sports club which has been going for over 50 years is still going strong.
Stroud Squash Club has provided courts for players for over fifty years.
In 1972 when the club was formed squash was growing rapidly with players numbering millions.
A group of players met at Stroud Rugby Club in November 1972 - they had been playing at other courts in the county such as at The Hare and Hounds at Westonbirt and got together to form Stroud Rugby Club (Squash Section) and raised the funds to build two courts at Fromehall Park.
At that first meeting were well-known local sportsmen, JV Smith, the England Rugby International, Jack Gaskell, the first chairman of the club, Brian Pollard, who had played rugby and cricket for Stroud, and Mike Clapham, who served for many years as chairman before handing over to the current chairman, Ewen Denning.
Other clubs in the area have closed but Stroud is still going strong.
Since 1972 the club has provided recreational, social squash and competitive squash for men and women, juniors and children.
Stroud teams have had a long history of success in the Gloucestershire leagues and the club has provided many players for the Gloucestershire inter county teams.
The Squash Club left Fromehall Park in 2021 and relocated at Wycliffe College, which has a record of turning out nationally and internationally successful players, and where there are three glass-backed courts and a warm welcome for new members.
Coaching is available for all levels.
Stroud has always been a friendly, sociable club – the main item on the first agenda in 1972 was arranging the bar rota!
Stroud SRC has always been the best financial option in the county.
Currently their youngest member is 14 and their oldest is 80 while the club has teams in Premier B and Division 2 of the Gloucester Squash Leagues
