Charlie McCann’s late strike gave Forest Green a 2-1 win against Sutton in their Vanarama National League match at Gander Green Lane.
Rovers made a bright start, with Christian Doidge seeing an early effort cleared off the line before Ryan Inniss headed over and Tom Knowles had a goal ruled out for offside.
Doidge then did break the deadlock in the 30th minute when he headed in a long throw from Ben Tozer, and almost nodded in another but Sutton keeper Steve Arnold made a smart save.
Sutton, who were relegated from the EFL along with Rovers last season, pressed for an equaliser in the second half, which eventually came with just five minutes left when Jeremy Sivi slotted into the far corner.
Forest Green, though, snatched all three points in the 89th minute when substitute Kyle McAllister played in McCann, who fired the ball into the bottom corner.
