AN INSPIRING grandson and grandmother are planning to take a daring leap from the skies in support of a good cause.

Benjamin Wheeler, aged 17, and his nan Diane - who live in Nupend near Whitminster - are planning to skydive in support of The Wave Project.

The charity provides surf therapy programmes to help improve children's mental health.

Benjamin, who recently completed a week-long placement with the charity in North Devon, was inspired by the organisation's skydiving challenge poster.

While this will be Benjamin's first skydive, Diane brings some prior experience to the table, having completed a jump before.

The pair are planning to take part in the challenge on September 29 at Dunkeswell, Devon as part of Benjamin’s 18th birthday celebrations.

Benjamin said: “I’m taking on the skydive because I’ve had the chance to volunteer for The Wave Project and have seen the amazing impacts it has on children and adults alike.

“I think it’s a great cause and is brilliant to get people involved in a sport I love.”

“The Wave Project is a legendary charity changing lives through surfing and by providing access to the beach through therapy that doesn't feel like therapy.

“The project takes people, no matter what challenges they're facing and teaches them to surf, giving them confidence, happiness and a community so they don't have to struggle with social, emotional and mental health challenges alone.”

Diane said: “I was thinking of buying Ben a skydive for his 18th birthday, but when the opportunity came up for us to go together and raise money for a charity that Ben has loved volunteering for, it was perfect.

“I can’t wait to do it with him!”

A charity spokesperson said: “By taking part in this challenge, Benjamin and Diane aim to make a significant impact on the lives of children as young as 8 who are struggling with mental health issues.

“There is still time for others to join the Wheelers and take the leap.
