THE great British fruit season is upon us! For month’s we suffer a lack and then, usually in July, it all comes at once.

Last week I announced the arrival of Court Farm cherries who will be with us for about 5 weeks, or as long as the crop lasts. At the same time the currants and gooseberries are in mid season and available from Styan’s Family Produce or organic from Coleshill.

Strawberries are in abundance and I was pleased to see some early plums last week too! Fruits contain such a broad range of good things for our bodies, and they really are meant to be eaten straight from the plant, not stored in a warehouse chiller for days, so now is the time to eat loads!

With the passing of the football and the weather being too poor to even hope a bbq might be possible, perhaps we should be turning our attention to some comfort eating. Whilst the market is a bastion of healthy eating, we also have a large range of sweet treats with mind altering qualities. Pipp and Co (as they are now called) continue to produce their great range of doughnuts, with their regular flavours supported by a constantly changing seasonal offering. The Welsh Cake Lady has taken the concept of the humble Welsh cake to another level with a wide range of flavours and stacked “sandwiches”. Daisy’s Farm café carries a wide range too with the gluten free Battenburg especially popular.
