IMAGINE walking onto a stage in front of a packed auditorium with no lines rehearsed and memorised or music or storyline to perform.
That is exactly what the stars or Showstoppers The Improvised Musical are doing every night at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham.
It is an ensemble of talented performers and musicians who take the audience on a highly amusing and slick improvised musical show which is completely different every show.
The show begins with the narrator asking the audience what the show is about, a title for the show and then which musical style the show should be played in - whether it is Sonndheim, Shrek or Wicked.
It could literally be anything.
The audience in Cheltenham did not disappoint and came up with the demolition of a pub as the story called Loser in a Boozer. It was then up to the incredibly talented cast to put together 90 minutes of improvised entertainment featuring catchy melodies and anarchic story lines all in the style of Six the musical, Hercules, Sweeney Todd and many more theatrical great styles.
The players have been working together since 2008 improvising shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and BBC Radio 4, picking up an Olivier Award for their innovative and hilarious performances.
It is unbelievable just how slick and funny their interpretations of the themes and storylines are.
The show I saw at the Everyman followed the tale of a pub called the Cross Keys undergoing demolition while two of the main protagonists succumb to their love for each other.
At the end of Act 1 the audience are asked to tweet in suggestions for Act 2 proving the show is definitely improvised. There are no "plants" in the audience so everything is genuinely spontaneous and performed live.
The verbal dexterity and natural rapport between the players made this a wonderful performance.
Showstopper The Improvised Musical is playing at The Everyman in Cheltenham until Saturday July 13.
