PLANS have been approved to turn a closed roadside hairdressers in Cainscross into a home.

A change of use application to transform the former AJ Unisex hair salon in Westward Road was submitted to Stroud District Council in April.

The hairdressers closed on Saturday, May 18 after nearly 25 years in business after owner and grandmother Alison Birch decided to retire.

Proposals include turning the hairdressers (class E) into a residential dwelling (class C3).

Floor plans show the property would be turned into a three-bedroom house with a kitchen, dining room and sitting room.

This would replace the old staffroom, shampoo room and treatment room on the ground floor.

Meanwhile, on the first floor, the one-bedroom flat above would be converted into three bedrooms, removing a kitchen and sitting room.

The application was officially approved on June 20.

A council document reads: “The proposal does not result in a net increase of residential units as the building already contains a residential flat to the first floor which will be amalgamated into the larger dwelling.

It continues: “Officers therefore recommend that the proposal requires prior approval and
that this is granted subject to conditions.”
