RADIO legend Vernon Harwood is hosting the Stroud News and Journal Community Awards.

The veteran broadcaster is well known throughout the county and beyond and has a career in journalism stretching over 35 years.

Vernon Harwood is a broadcaster and journalist who has been appearing on-air and in print for 35 years, interviewing everyone from Prime Ministers and Hollywood stars to veterans of both World Wars, Bletchley Park Code-Breakers and even a survivor of the Titanic disaster.

He’s heard regularly on Radio 4 and has presented programmes on the network marking the Platinum Jubilee, the Coronation of King Charles and the centenary of the BBC.

He was a presenter on BBC Radio Gloucestershire for 20 years, a TV news reporter and a newspaper columnist.

On-screen television credits include The Daily Politics with Andrew Neil and the regional news magazine Points West, in addition to his time as a correspondent and producer on the current affairs series Out of Westminster.

He was the commentator for the BBC’s coverage of the funeral of Harry Patch (the ‘Last Tommy’ of the WWI trenches) and has worked on programmes commemorating the centenary of the Great War, the 1990/91 Gulf War and the 70th anniversary of Desert Island Discs.

An experienced live event MC and classical concert compere, he’s appeared alongside artistes including Elizabeth Hurley, Lesley Garrett and Dame Felicity Lott. He’s a Trustee of the Gloucester History Festival where he’s chaired discussions with, among others, the former Beirut hostage Terry Waite, war correspondent-turned-politician Martin Bell and ex-Prime Minister Theresa May.

Vernon is the co-author of two books about rural Britain, he’s a Silver Sony Radio Award winner, a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow and his work as a documentary-maker has been recognised globally at the New York Radio Festival.

Vernon will be hosting the Stroud News and Journal Community Awards ceremony on Thursday June 20 at the Stonehouse Court Hotel.
