A STUNNING and historic home in Stroud has been named one of the best holiday homes in the country.
Butterrow Gate, a former toll house in Rodborough, has been named best for couples in the Sykes Gems Property Owner Awards 2023.
Owner Melanie de Gray Birch, who is from Stroud, bought the property with her husband Samuel, after studying and launching a career in fashion in London.
She fell in love with the building as a child, fascinated by stories of the property's rich history as a shop or home to the maltster.
The property, which dates back to 1825, was first opened as a holiday home by the couple in 2019.
Melanie said: “We’ve put so much into making Butterrow Gate a success, and constantly get great feedback from our visitors, but an award like this really does mean a lot.
“I’ve been fascinated with the history of the property from a young age and was keen to keep this alive while bringing it into the 21st century.
“It’s one of the few toll houses in the UK to still have the original wooden toll charges board fixed to the front of it and I love the unique aspect of this.
“We really enjoy hearing about each guest’s experience and what they’ve enjoyed during their stay.
“The area offers so much choice for couples who are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
“We look forward to welcoming many more guests in the future.”
The Sykes Gem Awards first launched in 2017 and aim to celebrate the best people and properties in the UK’s holiday let sector.
Holiday homes were judged using owner entries and guest feedback, alongside details like photos, occupancy figures and property amenities.
The judging panel were impressed by the style and facilities on offer at Butterrow Gate, along with guest feedback on cleanliness, comfort and value for money.
