A LICENCE has been granted for a new cocktail bar which may offer board game and quiz nights in Cheltenham.
The Rum Bar in Prestbury Road has been granted permission to sell alcohol and play indoor music by Cheltenham Borough Council.
The premises licence application, which was considered by Borough Councillors, allows indoor music from 4pm until 11.30pm Monday to Friday and from 2pm to 11.30pm on Saturday and from 2pm to 10.30pm on Sundays.
They also want to sell alcohol from 4pm until 11pm during the week and from 2pm until 11pm on Saturdays and from 2pm to 10pm on Sundays.
Applicant Paul Scarrott told the licensing sub-committee that they will be proactive in taking a zero tolerance approach to antisocial behaviour.
He also explained that they want the music to be low enough so that patrons to be able to speak to each other.
“It was never planned to be a pub or club environment, more of a cocktail bar. There will be no encouragement of binge drinking but possibly occasional board game nights, quiz nights on the quieter weekday evenings. So it’s more social.
“We want people to be able to talk to each other, therefore music will be at a controlled level. Staff will be trained to take the area outside the venue as their responsibility.
“We’ve fitted some acoustic panelling behind the bar to try and help deaden the sound. There will be clear signage reminding people to respect the local residents."
