A DIGGER being used for work on the railway line at Bowbridge in Stroud has fallen into the canal.

The vehicle can be seen in the water at Stanton's Bridge at Bowbridge in these pictures taken by Mimi Villaret.

Diesel is believed to be leaking from the vehicle.

"The bank gave way and the driver had to leap clear as it fell into the water," said an eyewitness.

These pictures were taken in the aftermath of the incident.

Network Rail has been carrying out work at the site to shore up the railway line embankment.

A temporary bridge has been constructed across the canal to facilitate the work.

Network Rail has been approached for a comment.

No one is believed to have been injured.
