POLICE are appealing for information after a spate of ‘offensive’ graffiti which has appeared in Stroud town centre and along canal tunnels.

Vandals have spray-painted rude words, images and tags onto walls, buildings and signposts which has been described by Stroud Police as ‘indecent’, ‘foul’ and ‘mindless’.

Some of the graffiti has spoiled the brickwork and murals inside canal tunnels.

PCSO Joanna Upton said in a community alert that the vandalism is creating an ‘eye sore’ and has caused damage to the 'local image' of Stroud as well as causing financial damage to owners.

She said: “Over recent weeks we have received several reports of the appearance of images, tags and offensive words being spray painted onto walls, buildings, signposts, and along the canal paths, spoiling the brickwork and murals inside some of the tunnels.

“Volunteers work hard to maintain our canals for the benefit of the whole community.

“They are extremely disheartened to find their hard work and efforts continuously thwarted by the reappearance of these mindless, and often indecent images, foul language and tags after they have been painstakingly removed.

“This is criminal damage and it carries a cost.

“It is impacting local businesses - with a significant cost for the owners of the affected buildings and is an increasing eye-sore, causing damage to the local image and economy of Stroud, offensive to both residents and members of the community as well as visitors from out of the area.”
