CAFE owners have reacted after plans were revealed for a Starbucks in Stroud.

An application has been submitted by the Five Valleys Shopping Centre for a branch of the international chain in King Street.

Stroud District Council will decide whether to approve the application to change the use of part of the former Poundland building from retail to takeaway and restaurant status.

Plans for an outdoor seating space with two new exterior umbrellas and planters are included.

The building as a whole is being converted into a new medical centre.

Despite being known for its variety of independent cafes, Stroud also has a Coffee #1 - which is just metres from planned Starbucks - and a Costa Coffee.

Woodruffs owner Jamie Shaw said: “It’s nice that empty units are becoming full and it might bring more people to town.

“I think we’ve got a different demographic of customers so I’m hoping it won’t affect us.

“But do we really want big chains in a town known for its independent shops and alternative spirit?”

Head chef at Star Anise Azra Sangster said: “We’re an alternative, independent cafe and we make our own cakes and croissants everyday on site.

“It’s very different to Starbucks which is a multinational corporation and quite faceless.

"For example we don’t know where they get their cakes from?

“We take care of our customers and try to support our other local businesses in the town and try to support the rest of the community.

“We’re doing everything in a small way but in a caring and respectful way.”

The nearest Starbucks is at Oldbury service station in Stonehouse near the M5.

Tony Davey, chair of the Stroud & District Chamber of Trade & Commerce, said: “I have no comment to make at this time.

“I hope to receive further information about these plans and their projected impact on the centre’s tenants in the near future.”

The planning application states: “The layout of the unit would be altered to best suit a coffee shop setting and so that the kitchen and behind of the house area works seamlessly.

“We intend to enhance the appearance of the building to bring the store in line with the current Starbucks specification.”

The application reference is S.22/1697/FUL.
