Stroud police have praised an off duty officer who arrested a man after a car was driven towards fans leaving a Gloucester rugby match.

Police were called to Kingsholm at 5pm after a car appeared to have been driven towards a group of people leaving the club.

The driver had then got out of the car and threatened people with a baseball bat before being restrained by an off-duty Special Constable from Stroud with help from members of the public.

Nobody was injured during the incident, which occurred close to the Kingsholm Inn outside the Kingsholm Road ground.

The 27-year-old driver was arrested immediately after the incident. He is being investigated for a number of offences, including possession and supply of drugs.

A 49-year-old man was arrested later on suspicion of drugs offences.

Both were taken into custody on Saturday night and, after questioning, released on Sunday as investigations continue

Gloucestershire police have confirmed that this was an isolated incident and not terrorism related.

Reacting to the incident Stroud Police tweeted: "Very proud to say one of our off duty @GlosPolSpecials SC Thomas was first on scene at the incident at Kingsholm.

"His brave actions helped bring it to a swift conclusion."

The incident happened shortly after the final whistle of Gloucester’s Premiership match against Wasps. Gloucester won the game 25-9 and sit second in the table having won both of their opening games of the season.
