Farmers' market news with Gerb Gerbrands.
Yes folks, the annual apple celebration will be on this Saturday so come on down and enjoy the sight of the multitudinous apple varieties.
We will be celebrating a wonderful fruit season with our Apple Day market with juicing in the street and Day’s Cottage displaying around 100 Gloucestershire apple varieties including over 50 from their Museum Orchard.
There will also be many rare varieties for sale including Gloucestershire’s best-known, Ashmead’s Kernel, originating in Gloucester in 1700!
The Days Cottage Orchards are now a quarter of a century in age, I remember taking part in a community apple tree planting day when my kids were little.
As you can imagine the trees have matured and increased in size and are still producing more and more fruit each year (conditions permitting of course). Each tree has a nesting box and high hedges plus abundant wildlife have created the perfect environment for unsprayed fruit trees, with pests and predators in equal measure maintaining the natural habitat.
We will be juicing in Union Street and handing out tasters of freshly squeezed juice to all! We will also be happy to squeeze a bag of your apples if you bring a bottle to take the juice away in.
Frocester Fayre will also be joining in with Apple Day by be bringing some apple-based products eg pork and apple sausages, apple pork pies, apple and sage stuffing scotch eggs and pork and apple burgers and I’m sure there will be specials on many other stalls.
