Minchinhampton PPG Transport Service
These kind hearted members of society take the time to drive patients of Minchinhampton Surgery to and from appointments if they lack the ability to drive.
Responding to hundreds of calls a month, these drivers give their time for free to meet the growing need of the population, especially in the face of an ageing population.
A spokesperson said: “We are delighted we’ve reached the shortlist.
“Patients and volunteer drivers are enthusiastic about our affordable driving service.
“This publicity is also important as it helps recruit new drivers within our widespread PPG.”
Charlie’s Cancer Support
Jo Sutherland, a cancer survivor herself, set up this group in 2014.
Based in Gloucester, therapy on offer ranges from Indian head massage to arts and crafts. It is available for all for those directly affected by cancer, including carers. The aim of the group is to get people to work on their mental health and wellbeing so they can ‘live well with this awful disease’.
Jo said: “We are extremely honoured to be finalists in the Community Award. This is a massive credit to the fantastic team of 31 volunteers that contribute their time into making Charlie’s the wonderful place it is.”
Weavers Independence Project
The organisation provides a safe space for adults with mental health issues to take part in productive and educational activities.
As a result of work being done by the group the overgrown grounds at Weavers Croft have been transformed into beautiful gardens.
Sue Tomlinson, district co-ordinator of the trust, said: “I was so pleased to see that our project had been nominated, to be able to shine a light on this unique slice of Gloucestershire will in itself highlight what is available for those needing a safe and tranquil space when experiencing mental ill health.”
