PART of the A46 stretch between Painswick and Brockworth is due to be closed to traffic for ten nights while the road is resurfaced.

Gloucestershire County Council is planning to work on the road after the Easter bank holidays.

Sections of the main road, which connects Gloucester and Stroud, have worn and need patching in preparation for surface dressing this summer.

The road will be closed from April 23 to May 3, between 7pm and 7am overnight, excluding weekends.

Residents and businesses will have access to their properties when it is safe to do so.

Kath Haworth, lead commissioner for highways at Gloucestershire County Council said: “We are working overnight to try to minimise disruption on this busy road.

"It is essential we carry out repairs to the network and the road needs to be closed for the safety of crews as well as members of the public.

"I want to thank everyone for their patience.”

A GCC spokesman said that the team will be carrying out 'patching' repairs.

"Patching is a more intensive repair used for fixing larger clusters of potholes and carriageway damage," he said.

"Crews will cut around the uneven section and replace with a large piece of flat tarmac.

"Later this year, crews will return with specialist surface dressing kit to seal the surface to extend its life and restore grip.

"This process can only be used in warmer drier weather and on roads in good overall condition and is often used to improve Gloucestershire’s road network."

The diversion route:

A diversion route will be in place from the south extent of the closure, where drivers can take the A4173 and continue along the road in the direction of Gloucester. At the roundabout with the A38 take the third exit and continue via the A38 Finlay Road and Eastern Avenue. At the roundabout with the A417 Corinium Avenue take the second exit and continue in the direction of Brockworth. At the next roundabout take the second exit and continue along the A417. At the junction with the A46 turn right. The diversion is the same in reverse.
