With the help of a Stroud geographer, a rural village in Uganda is undergoing a project that will transform livelihoods - and they need our help.
Dr Nicholas James has teamed up with Genevieve Asomo, who was born in Ghana - together they will sustainably overhaul the agriculture in Omor.
Genevieve Asomo said of the project: “I am now 25 years of age and it has always been an ambition of mine to have some land to farm and start an enterprise that will help my community.
“I’m now fully committed to agriculture and believe it can transform our livelihoods.”
The farming initiative aims to merge traditional farming techniques with modern and sustainable farming methods." They hope this will create job opportunities, improve the local economy and deliver food security.
So far, the project has been a huge success, and they have created a citrus orchard, passion fruit field, piggery, chicken farm and even beehives made from the surrounding timber.
The beehive was placed high up in a mango tree adjacent to the passionfruit field. This has attracted Uganda’s bees with each of the hives starting a colony, there is likely to be honey as early as March.
However, help is needed for the enterprise to get off the ground, so the people of Stroud have been asked to help raise funds for the project.
