STROUD District Council leader Geoff Wheeler keeps you up to date with what is happening at the council
WEDNESDAY, September 24/Thursday, September 25 – dog donations Great to read about the generosity of people and businesses in last week’s SNJ after the Manchester Dogs Home fire – proof as if it were needed that we are a nation of dog lovers. Unfortunately, the darker autumnal mornings and evenings do lead to an increase in dog fouling at this time of year. If there are problems in your area please call us on 01453 754478 or email environ mental.health@stroud.gov.uk.
Wednesday, September 24 – Canal awards I mentioned canal developments in last week’s diary column and today I attended the national Living Waterways Awards presentation in Leeds. We were proud to earn a commendation for our project to build 330 metres of new canal through Capels Mill although we would have obviously preferred to win the category.
Thursday, October 2 – Strategy and resources committee, Ebley Mill, 7pm Quite a few items on the agenda covering the council’s financial planning for the next few years and that of our housing service. Also to be discussed are a couple of land asset issues. Firstly, the committee will need to decide on whether the former Ship Inn site in Stonehouse on the A419 should be sold off for use as a petrol station or as a home for people with learning difficulties. The future of the Wallbridge site, at the entrance to Stroud town centre, will also be decided. Councillors will consider whether to turn it into a mixed-use development for commercial use and public open space or whether it should be kept for public open space alone. You can watch the meeting online at stroud.gov.uk/webcast.
Throughout October - Craft and Chat Elderly residents can try their hand at arts and crafts activities and make new friends at Craft and Chat sessions in Stonehouse, Cam, Nailsworth and Stroud. You may have read about these in the council’s recent newsletter but they are now in full swing. They are aimed at addressing social isolation and loneliness among older people, giving them the opportunity to meet new people. For more information on venues and times please call 01453 754304.
