STROUD District Council leader Geoff Wheeler keeps you up to date with what is happening at the council

Friday, September 12 – local economy, Shire Hall A BIT of a mouthful but this was the first public meeting of the Gloucestershire Economic Growth Joint Committee. Essentially it is comprised of Gloucestershire’s seven main councils and has the aim of promoting the economic wellbeing of the area.

Friday, September 19 – financial inclusion I mentioned last week that CAB chief executive Gillian Guy spoke at the Stroud & District CAB’s annual general meeting.

Shortly afterwards, we capitalised on her availability at a meeting of agencies and volunteers who work closely to help those on low incomes or in financial difficulty. As guest speaker at the Stroud District Money Forum she provided a national snapshot.

Friday, September 19 – canal redevelopment I’ve mentioned before how the restoration of the canal has been progressing and many of you will have read about the new homes and businesses which have been recently developed at Ebley Wharf.

Today saw the new Mace convenience store open in Central Square. The new 2,000 sq ft store is well stocked and I’m sure it will prove popular.

Whether you’re interested in the natural or the engineered aspects of the restoration, such as the locks and swing bridges, this revitalised stretch of canal really is worth a visit.

You will also be able rest your feet at the recently opened coffee and wine bar, or grab some food on the go from the Buttercup cafe.

Tuesday, September 23 – supermarket planning meeting This meeting was likely to finish quite late so I would be surprised if the SNJ were able to squeeze in the decisions reached on the three supermarket applications in time for deadline.

However, in this online age you can see what happened by logging on to stroudnewsandjournal.co.uk or if you would like to see exactly how the committee arrived at its decisions you can view a recording of the meeting at www.stroud.gov.uk/webcast Twitter users can also follow head of planning @phill_skill or the SNJ’s Kate Wilson @katewilsonsnj
