STAFF at a Stonehouse company have made a considerable donation to IT education in Africa of more than 100 computers to a charity.
Allan Webb Ltd, in Bonds Mill, regularly upgrades its computer systems and is often left with redundant computers.
However, for the past six years, it has been working with Cheltenham-based charity IT Schools Africa to ensure the computers are re-used.
This partnership has seen 125 computers donated to the charity for use in schools in Africa.
Steve Rigsby, managing director of Allan Webb, said: “We need to upgrade regularly to keep the company competitive and secure.
“But we hate waste. So it’s fantastic that schools in Africa and our local community can benefit, rather than adding to landfills.”
Many African state schools struggle to provide IT training, and, in an increasingly technology-driven world, IT skills can help break the cycle of poverty and dependence on aid for its young people.
Allan Webb’s participation in the programme has helped the charity to supply state secondary schools in Africa with a computer lab and IT training for teachers. Every computer donated is used on average by 25 children each year. This means that even a few computers can help hundreds of children.
